Ode to Poetry

by Susan Weber

you are harper lee,
wordpeckering marvel.
show me alabama’s midnight trials.

you are scout,
sparrow’s outsung heart.
take me with you to boo’s shy alter.

you are atticus,
rich throated father of my unschooled tracing.
i shun your dark genius
in wingless eternities of try.
enormity of want tangles my tongue.

take me to finch’s landing.
teach me one open note.
let the world pour ragged chords
into my unwashed longing,
borne by you,
never mocking.
